Google Play is getting another update this month and includes several critical fixes for Android Auto, Google TV, and more relating to account management, security, and so on.
What we find most interesting, or that’s most scary, is the added ability of Google Wallet to store our IDs and driver’s licenses. Like they don’t already know a ton about each one of us, the Big G is now going for our documents.
The feature was announced earlier this year, and now it is gearing for prime time, starting with the U.S. market.
To make that possible, Google is working with state and local law to allow users to leave their wallets at home. For that to happen, you would have to have vital documents and cards on your person without physically keeping them present.
So, Google will let you carry digital versions of these documents in an application on your phone.
During the beta phase, the feature will work only in selected US states, but it’s only obvious that at one point – the search giant wants to roll this capability nationwide and then across the globe.
The problem, however, is what happens if you have to unlock your device in order to show your driver’s license or ID to the DMV, police, or any other person allowed to request it on the fly. This procedure could pose a serious security risk to your private data.
Now the question is whether or not you’d trust your vital statistics with Google and on your phone as you’re out and about. We’re not sure we would; what do you say?
