
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has launched an investigation into OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.
“AI technology and its effects on privacy is a priority for my Office,” Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne said. “We need to keep up with — and stay ahead of — fast-moving technological advances, and that is one of my key focus areas as Commissioner.”
The investigation was launched in response to a complaint alleging the collection, use and disclosure of personal information without consent — something we have previously talked about on VPN Reports.
As this is an active investigation, no additional details are available at this time. But we do expect to hear something more on this shortly.
Chances are Canada won’t follow Italy’s footsteps and prohibit access to ChatGPT, but it may issue some guidance that could later be followed by other countries — all in an effort to protect the privacy of the users.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is gearing up to present measures that could address concerns of Italian authorities to lift the temporary ban potentially.
