How to Block a Number on Android?

Here's how you can stop those annoying robocalls and everyone else whose voice you don't want to hear...

unknown call

Whether you want to stop robocalls or regular calls from people and companies you don’t want to talk to – this article is for you. And it is especially so if you use an Android smartphone, cause that will be the platform we’ll cover in this piece. Read on for details…

Blocking a phone number with Android’s built-in tools

The most common way to block a phone number is through Android’s Phone app settings. To do that, open the Phone app, tap the three-dot menu at the top right and select “Settings.” On the next screen, tap “Blocked numbers.”

From here, you can view past numbers you’ve blocked (if any) and eventually unblock some. Also, and more importantly, you can “Add a number” you want to block. Once it’s added to that list, you will no longer be receiving calls from that number.

If that’s not enough for you, there is also an option to “Block calls from unidentified callers,” which is rather self-explanatory. Though we’re not sure such a drastic step is required in most cases.

Block existing contacts on Android

How about your contacts? Perhaps you want to block some of them? Not a problem.

Again, go to the Phone app and find the contact you’d like to block. Enter the contact details and tap the three-dot button in the top right corner of the screen. Then, just tap “Block numbers.”

From the next screen, you can simply block the number, or take it to the next level and report the number as spam. Whichever step you take, the contact will no longer be able to reach you from that phone number.

Blocking a recent call from an unknown number

One more time, you will have to go to the Phone app and check the Recent calls. Locate the number you want to block, click on it (don’t call it) and from the dropdown menu – tap “Block.” You’ll now have to confirm your action, and you’re good to go.

Blocking phone numbers with carrier-provided apps

Many carriers have realized that robocalls represent a big problem for their customers and so they’ve launched dedicated apps to address the issue.

In the U.S. – AT&T is offering Digital Call Protect, Verizon has Call Filter and T-Mobile’s service is called Scam Shield. Other U.S. carriers have something similar, and the same is true for mobile operators in other countries — as spam calls are increasingly becoming a (bad) worldwide phenomenon.

Blocking phone numbers with third-party apps

If your carrier doesn’t provide an app, you can still use a third-party app that will get the same job done. Among those we suggest trying are:

  • Hiya – which makes it easy to filter out unwanted calls and offers advanced features for premium users like reverse lookup and spam blocking.
  • Truecaller – auto-blocks spam calls and texts, and also includes community-based spam reporting to help protect others from scams, telemarketers, fraud, and more.
  • Nomorobo – the name stands for “NO MOre ROBO calls,” and it is a great option to put an end to annoying spam calls.

All of the apps mentioned above are available for Android as well as the iPhone users.

Should you block unknown numbers?

Finally, let’s address the issue of unknown phone numbers. We are not sure you should block all of them — we don’t do this so we can’t suggest anyone to do it either. Although spam calls come from unknown numbers, the same could be said for some other, perfectly legitimate calls. Like your old friend/relative who got a new phone number. This is especially the case for those coming from another country and would want to get a local SIM card to save on phone calls.

So, instead of blocking all unwanted calls, just block those that you’ve had bad experiences with in the past. You could do that after every spam call – go through the process outlined above that describes how to block phone numbers from Recent calls.

Also, dedicated apps could be of help as they maintain the list of phone numbers from where the scam calls come from. Unsurprisingly, some of these apps are not completely free as it takes a lot of resources to maintain this list.

Last but not the least, consider adding your number to the Do Not Call register. This way, legitimate telemarketers won’t call you ever again.

Hopefully, you will find some of this advice useful and will manage to reduce the number of unwanted calls.
