Did you know that you can use a VPN on your smart TV?
For Android-powered smart TVs, there are dedicated Android apps – but what about smart TVs running other platforms, such as those sold by LG and Samsung?
They too could be included in your home/office VPN network and not only benefit from a more secure connection — which could be important if you’re browsing the web or checking your email on the big screen — but also from access to popular streaming services. Specifically, many users would like to be able to access US Netflix on their TVs, which has the biggest catalog of movies, as well as other services like Disney+ and HBO Max.
The last mentioned is getting especially interesting now that Warner Bros decided to stream movies in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day. So yes, this will let you watch the company’s blockbusters from the comfort of your home at the same time while people are watching them in theaters.
If you don’t have an Android TV-based TV, there are two ways to set up your smart TV to connect to a VPN:
Method #1: Install a VPN on your router
All major VPN providers — and definitely those in our Best of the Best VPNs list — include router support, allowing other devices in your home/office to benefit from a more secure and private connection.
In order to do this, just visit your VPN’s support pages and find out how to set up your router. The complexity of this task will be easier or harder depending on the router you use, but if something goes wrong – you can always contact the VPN’s support to guide you along the way.
This isn’t rocket science and with a little luck, you should be able to complete the task within a few minutes. To help you along the way, many VPNs have created video tutorials that are super-easy to understand.
In case you care to know, this is the way we roll and the way we suggest to everyone.
Method #2: Share your computer’s connection over Wi-Fi
A different method presumes to share a VPN connection from your PC or Mac with other devices and then connecting to that (VPN) connection with your smart TV.
Basically what you will have to do is share your VPN connection via Wi-Fi and then on your smart TV search for that new connection.
This is a multi-step process that is easy to follow, and again – you’re best off visiting your favorite VPN’s support pages for detailed, step-by-step instructions. There could be slight differences between VPN services, though.
Ready to watch?
Now that you have your smart TV equipped with a VPN connection, you’re all set to watch any movie or TV show you like.
Start the app of your favorite streaming service, find the content you want to watch and hit “Play.” Make sure to have popcorns ready — cause you’ll need ’em. 😉
