Fake NordVPN Representatives Responsible for Phishing Attacks

Scammers, posing as NordVPN employees, targeting online creators...

NordVPN fake employees

NordVPN is the best VPN we suggest to everyone, but that success comes with its risks. Just recently, the company behind the popular VPN client informed the general public that some malicious actors, posing as NordVPN employees, are responsible for phishing scams.

How does this work?

Hackers are contacting online creators on YouTube and other platforms, pretending to represent major brands — and NordVPN is one of them.

Once they convince their victims that they work for the company, hackers offer to arrange some form of promotional integration. To that end, they want to trick creators into installing malware on their device(s).

Hackers tell their victims to download a file, claiming that it is a contract or some piece of essential promotional material — while it is really a piece of malicious software that can hijack the creator’s device and accounts.

How to identify scammers?

To help the online creator community, NordVPN shared a few tips on how to spot these malicious emails:

  • Check the email address. If NordVPN contacts you, that person will have an email that ends with @nordvpn.com, @nordvpnmedia.com, or @nordsec.com. The devil is in the details, so you better triple-check that address as it could be similar to @n0rdvpn.com or @nord-security.biz — which are NOT associated with NordVPN.
  • Look for spelling and grammar errors. Official messages from NordVPN and all other major companies seldom (if ever) contain mistakes of this kind. If you notice any errors or messy formatting, be on your guard.
  • Be wary of urgencies. Major companies, and again NordVPN, are seldom in a hurry to seal the deal. In contrast, malicious actors want to close the deal ASAP so they can start harvesting your data and cause other sorts of havoc.

Finally, you’ll want to use your brain and decipher the message received. As we always say, if the offer is too good to be true – chances are that is indeed the case.

What to do if a scammer has contacted you?

Or are you unsure whether the email you’ve got is legit? You can always contact NordVPN’s customer support team through live chat or by emailing support@nordvpn.com. If someone within NordVPN has already contacted you, they will let you know whether or not the email you’ve received is genuine.

Also, if you are certain that the email is fake, again contact NordVPN so they can do something about it and help protect other potential victims.

We keep loving what NordVPN is doing to make the Internet a slightly safer place. And again, if you still haven’t found a VPN that fits your needs – make sure to check out NordVPN.
