As part of its efforts to set itself apart from Google in the browser space, Mozilla has been selling Firefox as a browser more focused on privacy and security. In that sense, we have seen the company launching its very own VPN which came out of beta last year.
Initially though, it was only available in a few markets, including the US, UK, Canada, New Zealand, and Malaysia. Well, now it’s heading to the EU starting with France and Germany.
What’s cool about Mozilla VPN?
The cool part is that it will attract regular Firefox users, helping them better secure themselves on the Internet. As a result, it will be much harder for the likes of Google and Facebook to track them down.
Also, Mozilla’s VPN uses WireGuard which should deliver great download and upload speeds. And that’s one of the points the company is emphasizing – that its VPN is “amazingly fast.”
Mozilla’s VPN clients are available on all popular platforms — including Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Finally, it was a relatively affordable service that could be bought for just $5 a month, at least in the United States.
What’s not cool with Mozilla’s VPN?
Mozilla is still new in this “game” with its network counting around 750 servers in 30+ countries. In contrast, the best VPNs have servers in twice as many countries and who knows how many more locations. Simply put – they’ve been in the VPN market for longer and building a server network takes time and other resources.
Another thing we don’t like is the price; whereas Americans can get Mozilla’s VPN for $5 a month, the same service is sold for €9.99 in a month-to-month payment. To be fair, the price goes down to €6.99 or €4.99 by paying in 6- and 12-month increments, respectively.
Again, that’s more than what the best VPNs cost.
So what should you do?
Get a VPN that has been on the market for a long time. That’s why we’ve created VPN Reports in the first place – to help anyone select and sign-up for the best possible VPN for his/her unique needs.
At the end of the day, we did select what we deem to be the Best of the Best VPNs and that’s the page you should consult to get yourself a VPN protection. Unlike Mozilla’s VPN, all services on that list have been field-tested for years and have millions of users. All these users can’t be wrong. That, at least, is what we think and that’s how we roll.
