There are no sacred cows for hackers. Instead of keeping their focus on the likes of governments and big corporations – they are expanding their reach to include car makers. And today’s story isn’t related to major car makers like GM, Toyota or VW — rather, it involves Ferrari.
Now I know why I won’t get one. Instead, if you’re like me, you’ll get yourself a Lambo…I wish…
Anyhow, Ferrari has recently confirmed it was hit by a ransomware attack that exposed customers’ personal information.
“We regret to inform you of a cyber incident at Ferrari, where a threat actor was able to access a limited number of systems in our IT environment,” Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna said in a letter.
The company said that hackers managed to access customers’ names, addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers. Payment information, however, has not been stolen — Ferrari claims.
“We can also confirm the breach has had no impact on the operational functions of our company,” Ferrari said in a separate statement. So if you’ve been waiting for your Ferrari, you’d be glad to know it will arrive on time. 😉
The carmaker hadn’t specified the number of customers affected by the breach or how or when the company was compromised.
Last October, a ransomware group known as “RansomEXX” claimed to have breached the carmaker, though at the time, Ferrari denied it. However, TechCrunch has reportedly seen a listing on the RansomEXX website with 7GB of data allegedly stolen from Ferrari, including internal documents, data sheets and repair manuals.
Ferrari’s CEO confirmed that the company had not paid the hackers’ ransom demand without revealing the amount of money hackers have requested. He added that the company had started an investigation with a third-party cybersecurity company.
As I said at the start, we should all get Lamborghinis to ensure our data won’t be compromised. 😉
