ProtonVPN is yet again expanding its service with the addition of new servers in Romania, which is the 35th country in the company’s network. As a result, ProtonVPN customers can now browse the Internet using a Romanian IP address.
We doubt these addresses will be used for accessing video streaming services like Netflix and Hulu — cause for that you’ll want a US-based server — but there are other use cases for a VPN that are perfectly fine to use with Romania-based servers. For start, VPN users want to stay anonymous online, and the addition of new server locations expands the number of options for ProtonVPN customers.
In total, ProtonVPN added eight new VPN servers in a data center in Bucharest. They are available to users on one of its paid plans:
- RO#1-3 servers are available on the Basic plan.
- RO#4-8 servers are available on Plus and Visionary plans.
For those who haven’t heard, high-speed Internet is starting to reach out into the Romanian countryside. As of 2018, over 60 percent of households had fixed-line access to the Internet, the majority of which had speeds of over 100 Mbps. With more Romanians browsing the Internet, ProtonVPN’s new servers will allow them to protect their online activity by encrypting their Internet traffic using a local IP address.
Furthermore, ProtonVPN users with Plus or Visionary Plans can also use Tor over VPN, which lets them access the Tor network with a single click. This adds an additional layer of protection and unlocks onion sites that can only be found through the Tor network.
ProtonVPN works on various desktop and mobile clients — including Android, Windows, macOS, Linux, and iOS.
Earlier this year, the company added servers in Estonia.
