The Great

There is a good reason why The Great is a popular series, with many folks praising the show for its wits and great performance. Streaming on Hulu, however, The Great is not available all around the world. That is, except, if you don’t know how to trick Hulu’s servers into thinking that you’re in the U.S. But I’m getting ahead of myself, let’s first see what The Great is all about and we’ll take it from there…

What’s The Great all about?

Based upon Tony McNamara’s play that premiered at the Sydney Theatre Company in 2008, The Great is a comedy-drama television series loosely based on the rise of Empress of Russia – Catherine the Great. The series is fictionalized and portrays Catherine in her youth and marriage with Emperor Peter III (amalgamated with Peter II) focusing on the plot to kill her depraved and dangerous husband. Eventually, Catherine managed to rise from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia’s history.

The first season has 10 episodes all of which have been released on Hulu on May 15, 2020. In July 2020, Hulu renewed the series for a second season.

The Great main cast and characters

  • Elle Fanning as Catherine the Great
  • Nicholas Hoult as Emperor of Russia – Peter III
  • Phoebe Fox as Marial
  • Sacha Dhawan as Orlo
  • Charity Wakefield as Georgina Dymova
  • Gwilym Lee as Grigor Dymov
  • Adam Godley as Archbishop “Archie”
  • Douglas Hodge as General Velementov
  • Belinda Bromilow as Aunt Elizabeth
  • Richard Pyros as Count Raskolnikov
  • Bayo Gbadamosi as Arkady

On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season of The Great holds an approval rating of 88% based on 76 critic reviews, with an average critic rating of 7.46/10. “Gorgeous, if gratuitous, The Great can’t quite live up to its namesake, but delicious performances from Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult and a wicked sense of humor make it a pretty good watch,” the website’s critical consensus reads.

How to watch The Great in the US?

If you can access Hulu, you can watch The Great – it’s that simple. You’ll need a valid Hulu subscription and you’re good to go to watch all the content Hulu has, not just The Great. We do think Hulu has some solid series and is worth the money.

The problem emerges when you want to travel overseas and then Hulu won’t let you in — it is restricted for access from the U.S. soil. Then, you’ll need a VPN to get your Hulu fix. Which is what the next section is all about…

How to watch The Great from all around the world?

The Great is available on Channel 4 and StarzPlay in the UK. StarzPlay also distributes the series in Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Benelux, Latin America and Brazil. Moreover, More.tv broadcasts the show in Russia, Sky in New Zealand, and Prime Video in Canada.

But say you want to watch The Great from Hulu so you could also access other shows on its platform. For that, and as we’ve mentioned above, you’ll need a VPN to bypass its geo-restrictions. Once you have one running on your device(s), you will be able to connect to a US-based server from where you will be able to enjoy The Great.

A valid Hulu subscription is still required, and in order to get one — if you’re not an American — you should use a Hulu gift card. We suggest visiting MyGiftCardSUPPLY for that, where — in case you wonder — you can also find gift cards for other popular services.

Once that part is done, simply fire up the VPN, select a US-based server and you’re good to go.

A VPN offers much more…

In addition to letting you watch The Great and access Hulu from everywhere, a good VPN will also let you anonymously surf the web so that major corporations and government agencies can’t track your web whereabouts. Also, you will get to access all other content and services that could otherwise be outside of your reach. Think: Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, HBO, BBC iPlayer and so on. Furthermore, a VPN will encrypt all your online data, thus shielding you from hackers and spies.

A VPN app can be installed on your computer and other devices like smartphones and tablets, as well as the router so you could protect your entire network.

To sum it up, we think everyone should have a VPN these days. And if you’re into Hulu and other such services, we suggest you start by checking our list of Best VPNs for Streaming and take it from there. We’re sure you’ll find a VPN for your needs on that page.
